Spartan Armor Systems has built a strong reputation in the civilian steel armor market. The Omega AR500 Level III+ plates feature their proprietary Encapsaloc anti-spall coating, multi-curve profile for body conformity, and a published ballistic test record that includes M193 (5.56 at 3,100fps) — the key "+" in their Level III+ rating.
Uncoated steel armor is dangerous: bullet fragments (spall) and jacket material scatter on impact, potentially causing injury. Encapsaloc coats the strike face to capture spall. This is not optional — any steel armor purchase should specify anti-spall coating. Spartan includes it standard.
Standard NIJ Level III does not test with M193 5.56 — a very common round. Level III+ indicates extended testing that includes M193 at velocity. For operators who expect 5.56 threats, the "+" is a meaningful difference, not marketing language.
