The LifeStraw Personal is a straw-format hollow fiber membrane filter that removes 99.999999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.999% of waterborne parasites. The 0.2-micron filter pore size stops Giardia, Cryptosporidium, E. coli, and Salmonella. One filter handles 1,000 gallons — approximately 3 years of drinking water at 1 gallon/day.
LifeStraw requires no batteries, no chemicals, no moving parts, and no priming beyond the initial use. It functions in any temperature above freezing. For a grid-down scenario, a device with zero failure modes is materially different from one that requires power or consumables.
LifeStraw products have been distributed in disaster response operations (Haiti, Nepal, Africa) where contaminated water was the primary health threat. That validation — actual deployment under genuine emergency conditions — is meaningful.
